Three Odd Reasons to Get a Divorce

Each family is unique, and therefore each divorce has its own individual set of circumstances. While some more common reasons may be present in most divorces, some divorces begin from what you would likely not consider “typical.” Here are three stories of divorces sought for strange reasons.

Too Many Cats

It’s not uncommon for pet custody to be one of the most contentious issues in a divorce case, but it’s not very often that pets actually cause the divorce itself. Such was the case in 2002 when an Israeli man came home to find that his wife had adopted not one, not two, but 550 cats. The husband supported his wife’s choice initially, but eventually filed for divorce when he realized how much of his earnings was being spent on cat food and that every corner of his house was constantly filled with multiple cats.

A Bad Bet

A man with a serious gambling problem in Russia had already blown his life savings in a poker game, but refused to back down believing that his luck was on the verge of turning around. With no money to wager, he bet the only thing he had left: his wife. As luck would have it, he lost again.

When the winner came to collect his prize, the gambler’s wife was so furious she immediately filed for divorce from the gambler. The story took an even stranger turn some time later, as the winner of that game and the gambler’s wife soon began a relationship and were married themselves not long after.

More than Just a Number

Women have lied about their age for many different reasons. One woman in China reportedly did so to appear more attractive to her potential suitor. When he finally proposed, the man believed she was 24 years old. After 10 years of marriage, she finally confessed that she had lied about her age, and that she was actually 30 when he popped the question. This offended the man so greatly that he filed for and was successfully granted a divorce.
